Elephants belong to the group of Proboscidea. About 50 million years ago there were as many as 350 various species that belonged to this class. Mammoths and mastodons are the most familiar nowadays.
African elephants live in central Africa, and Asian elephants are found in India, Indochina, Malaysia and South China. Both are herbivorous. The African species feed on grass, branches and twigs.
African elephants live in Savannah forests. They may reach 11 to 12 feet in height at the shoulder and weigh up to 9 tons.
In the end of the 20th century, the population of elephants sharply decreased. That happened because of persistent and uncontrolled encroachment by men upon the elephants’ natural habitat.
